The Challenge

‍Recharge, the largest high-power charging network in the Nordics, has already deployed BESS sites in Sweden: one in Västerås with ENICO and one in Malmö with Polarium, both enabled by Flower as BRP.

Yet, deploying new battery models across a large network presents a complex challenge. Each manufacturer uses different protocols, interfaces, and control logic, making it difficult to integrate batteries reliably without risking vendor lock-in or site instability.

At the same time, the business case for BESS only works if the batteries can serve multiple purposes: peak shaving, boosting, arbitrage, and participation in flexibility markets. Running a battery for a single use case is rarely enough to achieve the required ROI.

Recharge needed a unified way to connect new suppliers and a smart optimisation layer capable of turning every installed battery into a flexible, revenue-generating asset.

The solution

Thanks to FLEXECHARGE’s HARMON-E unique architecture, Recharge can easily integrate various BESS brands, including ENICO and Polarium, into a single control layer that communicates seamlessly with chargers, meters, and the grid.

The platform abstracts battery-specific protocols (API, Modbus TCP, MQTT) and standardises them, ensuring stable connection, reliable telemetry, and full control across both pilot sites. This frees Recharge to test new suppliers without being locked into any hardware ecosystem.

At the Västerås site, currently the active one, FLEXECHARGE enables multiple operational strategies on top of the same battery:

  • Energy trading via Flower (BSP), where the battery participates in multi-market optimisation
  • Peak shaving, where the battery actively limits site consumption to avoid demand peaks

This flexibility is key: Recharge can dynamically switch how the battery is used depending on where the highest value is generated.

Real impact at Västerås

At the Västerås site, FLEXECHARGE enables Recharge to continuously optimise how the battery is used, switching between value streams depending on market conditions and operational needs.

In the initial phase, the battery was operated for energy trading via Flower, generating approximately €4,000 in revenue within the first month. This demonstrated the immediate potential of participating in flexibility markets.

Building on this, the operational strategy has expanded to include peak shaving, where the battery actively supplies energy during high-demand periods to limit site consumption and reduce demand charges.

Based on recent site behaviour and tariff assumptions, peak shaving alone is expected to deliver monthly savings in the range of ~3,000–8,000 SEK, with an average around 5,500 SEK per month. These figures are indicative and depend on charging patterns, seasonality, and grid tariffs.

Together, these results highlight the true value of co-located BESS:

  • Immediate revenue generation through market participation
  • Ongoing cost savings through peak demand reduction
  • Operational flexibility to shift between use cases as conditions change

Rather than being locked into a single application, Recharge can continuously optimise each battery to maximise total value, turning energy storage into a dynamic, revenue-generating asset.
