Accelerating Change: Europe’s EV Charging Milestones for January 2025
As the new year begins, Europe’s charging infrastructure is moving full speed ahead, setting the stage for a greener future. From regulatory shifts in Germany and France to advancements in charging technology across regions, the first month of 2025 has already brought significant developments. Let’s take a closer look at the latest updates from Charge Point Operators (CPOs) across Europe.
CPO Latest News in Northern Europe
UK Charging Growth Soars:
In 2024, the UK's EV charging network expanded significantly, with Zapmap reporting over 20,000 new charging points installed nationwide. This 38% increase brought the total to 73,699 charging points, with ultra-rapid chargers (150kW+) leading the growth at 84% year-over-year.
Circle K Expands Multi-Use Stations:
Circle K continues to develop multi-use charging stations for heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) and passenger EVs across Scandinavia, focusing on remote and underserved regions.
Uno-X Supports Long-Haul Operations in Norway:
Uno-X is deploying high-capacity charging hubs along Norway’s major freight routes, catering to long-haul electric truck operations.
CPO Latest News in Central and Western Europe
Fastned Network Expansion:
Fastned launched a new bond subscription in the Netherlands and Belgium to support network growth after raising €82 million in 2024, including €21.5 million in Q4.
Largest Station in France:
Fastned opened its largest station in France, Aire de Saulce. During peak season, it features 17 chargers (300 kW each) and can serve up to 180,000 cars daily.
Growth Highlights:
Fastned secured 569 high-traffic locations across nine countries, with 346 stations operational by the end of 2024. Q4 2024 charging revenue hit €26.6 million (a 39% year-on-year increase), crossing €100 million in annualised run-rate revenue for the first time.
Powerdot Introduces Autocharge:
In partnership with Chargemap, Powerdot launched the much-awaited Autocharge feature in France, Belgium, and Poland. This feature enables 2.5 million Chargemap users to charge their EVs automatically without an app or payment interaction.
Powerdot Expands Network Across Europe:
Powerdot operates 9,000 charging points across six European countries and aims to deploy 15,000 fast-charging points by 2025. This expansion is backed by a €260 million investment, including €153 million allocated for France and €50 million for Belgium.
TotalEnergies Drives Zero-Emission Transition in the Netherlands:
TotalEnergies will install over 50 fast-charging stations in major cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague. The company plans to expand its network to 100 charging stations in Rotterdam and add 17 stations in Utrecht, focusing on shopping centres and sports parks.
Zero-Emission Zone Support in the MRA:
TotalEnergies, in partnership with two other providers, will develop 600 fast-charging locations in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (MRA). The first station in Diemen has already been launched, with dozens more planned for this year to support the region's transition to zero-emission goals.
Sustainability Efforts:
TotalEnergies integrates solar canopies at many stations to enhance energy efficiency and ensure additional power supply. The company uses batteries at grid-constrained locations to support fast charging, overcoming infrastructure challenges while maintaining sustainability.
Key Infrastructure Updates:
Milence: Deployed 11 HDV charging stations across Europe, focusing on logistics routes.
ENGIE Vianeo: Installed five hubs along France’s Paris-Lyon corridor to ensure reliable HDV charging.
Aral Pulse: Expanding high-capacity hubs for HDVs in Germany at key logistics centres.
Gofast: Pioneering ultra-fast charging in Switzerland with renewable energy integration.
Milence and TRATON Celebrate Partnership:
Milence and TRATON Charging Solutions have enabled all active Milence charging hubs in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France for TRATON group brand customers, making significant strides in facilitating seamless charging for heavy-duty vehicles. The partnership has enhanced customer service coordination between Milence as a Charge Point Operator (CPO) and TRATON as a Mobility Service Provider (MSP). Together, they have contributed to industry insights and helped define HDV charging guidelines through the EV Roaming Foundation, driving innovation and setting industry standards in the heavy-duty vehicle sector.
Regulatory Developments:
In France, the Mobility Orientation Law (LOM) has entered a pivotal phase. As of January 2025, all non-residential buildings with 20 or more parking spaces must install at least one charging station. This regulation is part of a €13.4 billion investment plan to expand EV infrastructure and represents a significant opportunity for Charge Point Operators (CPOs). The mandate aligns with France’s broader goal to phase out fossil fuel vehicles by 2040, accelerating the country’s transition to sustainable mobility.
Germany's Building Electromobility Infrastructure Act (GEIG) now mandates non-residential buildings with over 20 parking spaces to install charging points. The regulation targets 12,000 parking spaces by 2025 and will eventually require one charger per 10 spaces, creating significant opportunities for Charge Point Operators (CPOs) in both commercial and residential sectors. While fines of up to €10,000 can be imposed for non-compliance, enforcement is expected to remain lenient until the EPBD implementation in 2026, giving businesses time to adapt and scale their infrastructure.
